With the Super Mega Rainbow Updater we spread the rainbow by giving a Skittles twist to something our fans were already doing everyday on Facebook.Skittles fans simply entered their status update into the Updater app. Within minutes, a video of the Skittles call centre's interpretation of the update was posted on their Facebook wall and newsfeeds - as well as on Youtube.Key to the idea’s success was that the app worked in real time, so that fans could use it for their daily banter and conversations. It was a truly social app with the Skittles brand at the heart of the interaction.
Outcome
Typically as little as 1% of Facebook apps have over 100 daily users. In two weeks our app had over 21,000 users, and our fanbase swelled by over 500,000 as Skittles Updater videos spread throughout the fanbase and their friends.The Super Mega Updater played a huge role in increasing likes and comments on our page by 790%, and ultimately helping us become the most popular confectionery brand on Facebook UK. With over 2 million fans it’s only marginally behind X-Factor, which is staggering for a brand of sweets.
