Background

[5G - next-generation technology that is yet to be commercialized. Our aim was to get more people to understand its features and benefits]

NTT Docomo is working on having 5G commercialized by 2020. This next-generation communication technology is known for its high-speed, large-capacity, low-latency and massive terminal connectivity capabilities. Getting the general public to fully comprehend how 5G can unlock the potential of mobile communication was not an easy feat. Thus, our challenge was to create a nationwide entertainment experience that showcased this cutting-edge technology in an easily understandable way.

Idea

[5G - next-generation communication technology that is yet to be commercialized. Conducting Perfume’s Yokohama Arena concert in Shibuya to get more people to understand its features and benefits]

NTT Docomo is working on having 5G commercialized by 2020. This next-generation communication technology is known for its high-speed, large-capacity, low-latency and massive terminal connectivity capabilities. Using video, audio, lighting and control signals from devices, we transmitted the large volume of data that was generated at the concert venue in Yokohama in real time, to the temporary event site near the famous scramble crossing in Shibuya. It allowed for us to showcase how 5G can unlock the potential of mobile communication to the general public in an easily understandable way.

Strategy

Using the high-speed, large-capacity and low-latency capabilities of 5G, we transmitted not just the sound and video, but also the lighting and data that controls the devices, allowing the 2000 people in Shibuya to have the same experience as those at Yokohama Arena.

Execution

[Conducting Perfume’s Yokohama Arena concert in Shibuya! Space Synchronization Project! ]

December 31, 2018. Iconic techno-pop group Perfume were holding a countdown concert at Yokohama Arena. Using video, audio, lighting and control signals from devices, we transmitted the large volume of data that was generated at the concert venue in Yokohama in real time, to the temporary event site near the famous scramble crossing in Shibuya. When Perfume called out to Shibuya from Yokohama, the devices worn by the audience in Shibuya synchronized and responded to Perfume's calls in real time, uniting the enthusiastic crowds at the two venues. Online banner ads were used to promote the event and drive traffic to the project's website during the week leading up to the project's implementation. The concert was also livestreamed on the project's website on December 31, 2018.

Outcome

·5G was used to unite the 12,000 concert-goers at Yokohama Arena and the crowd of 2000 at Shibuya as part of one futuristic public viewing experience.

·The event was livestreamed allowing people across the country to welcome the new year together.

·The event went viral in the media and was widely covered on over 100 popular TV programs, websites and social media platforms, and made the headlines on Japan's most viewed news website.
