Description

During Sexual Assault Awareness Month and in support of their ‘Drink Responsibly Initiative’, South African Breweries partnered to produce The Spike Detector, an innovative solution that turned a traditional bar coaster into a drink spike detection test.

This allowed women to instantly check the safety of their drinks against date rape drugs such as GHB and Ketamine. A crisis helpline gave them access to instant medical assistance should they need it.

Execution

South African Breweries turned a traditional bar coaster into a drink spike detection test. This was branded with a clear message on how to test your drink for drink spiking. In the event that someones drink had been spiked, they were prompted to call a helpline found on the coaster. This alerted emergency services to get immediate medical assistance to the affected party. This activation occurred in popular drinking venues during Sexual Assault Awareness month, bringing attention to an otherwise unknown crisis.

Outcome

Tier 3 - Business Objective

Due to the success of this initial run and its relevance to their ‘drink responsibly’ initiative, South African Breweries are now committed to developing this technology further to find ways to improve the user experience and its effectiveness.

This is in an effort to distribute nationally in order to continue raising awareness across the country and encourage a change in consumers behaviour, making them more vigilant and personally responsible for the safety of their drinking habits.
