For the most part, what you see on screen is what was actually captured in-camera. There is very little CG or other digital manipulations. All the characters are hand-crafted figures with metal armatures that were painstakingly repositioned shot by shot to create the action. The settings are scale models that were also built by hand, and the backgrounds are matte paintings. Due to the painstaking nature of the craft, the entire film was previzualized with a 3d animatic to ensure all the timings and camera angles were exactly right before the stop motion process began.
