Description

The uncomfortable truth is that as we grow older, we grow suspicious of strangers and new experiences. When you fear the unknown, it’s easy to question man’s kindness. But a child explores the world with a sense of wonder and fearlessness; open and trusting to the unknown. We all begin our lives with the natural ability to feel like we belong anywhere. That’s why we chose a baby, meandering down a hallway toward a door to the outside world. So that viewers are reminded to see the world like a child again. Voiceover from actress and film director Angela Bassett highlights the inclusive nature of the campaign, “Is mankind? Go see.”

Execution

We launched our campaign during a media moment that would further punctuate the value of kindness; during the 2015 ESPY Awards moments after Caitlyn Jenner received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. As most brands ran from the volatility of the moment, we embraced it, premiering an adapted “transkind” version of our “is mankind?“ anthem. The media and the moment amplified the message.

Outcome

Airbnb believes in a world where all 7 billion people can belong anywhere. Our Transkind campaign was one big step in moving towards that goal by promoting kindness and belonging. Our message was embraced by members of the transgender community and general public alike, who continued spreading our message of kindness.
