‘We’re The Superhumans’ gives an insight into over 140 individuals - both sports people and everyday people - with a huge range of disabilities, all overcoming their disabilities. The ad portrays superability over disability, reflecting the ‘Yes I Can’ of the music track, spreading awareness and drumming enthusiasm to Rio Paralympic Games.
Execution
How do you cast for 140+ roles with varying but specific disabilities? Research, persistence, determination and Superhuman belief.
The film had no actors so we couldn’t just call casting agents. We also had to find a swing band consisting of people with a broad range of disabilities that could authentically record a Sammy Davis Jr classic.
Then we needed someone who could sing swing with a voice like Sammy Davis Jr. In a wheelchair. With high mobility.
We looked for the best and most diverse athletes, convincing them to take time out during their Paralympics training to film in London.
We found our Superhumans from all around the world. Most people had jobs so it was a big decision to take time out to travel to London for a film shoot with people they knew nothing about.
A Superhuman undertaking but we achieved all our goals against all the odds!
