Background
United Way is the only fund-raising organization in Taiwan dedicated to assist diverse underprivileged groups. Every contribution made to United Way supports the needs of over 16 underprivileged groups, including elderly individuals living alone, victims of abuse, children in rural areas, and people with disabilities... However, many Taiwanese tend to donate to one specific underprivileged group or support one single purpose. Therefore, we need to enhance public awareness of United Way, and increase their willingness to donate to United Way at the same time.
Idea
Through gathering handwritten wishes from diverse underprivileged groups, we arranged the aspirations in accordance with the design of an actual thousand-dollar bill, creating the “Wish Bill.” At first glance, it appears to be a representation of a gigantic thousand-dollar bill. However, upon closer inspection, one discovers that it is composed of distinct wishes from numerous underprivileged individuals. This powerful visual illustrates how United Way efficiently fulfills needs with a single donation. The aim of United Way was to provide the public with an experience, allowing them to witness and feel the potential impact of their individual donations being maximized through the support of United Way.
Strategy
Each underprivileged individual has their own urgent needs. Through displaying the real wishes from the underprivileged individuals, people gain a clearer understanding of how their single donation can fulfill specific needs, which increases their willingness to make donations. We strategically chose the shopping season before the Lunar New Year, and displayed at high-traffic department stores. At first glance, it appears to be a bill, which attracts people’s attention. Upon closer inspection, one discovers that they’re actually handwritten wishes from underprivileged individuals, which created a moment of surprise. We not only showcased the diversity of assistance United Way provides, but also made the wishes of the underprivileged a part of people’s shopping lists.
Execution
In order to replicate the appearance of an actual thousand-dollar bill, we rasterized an actual bill, breaking it down into mosaics and separating it into 48 colors. We then printed post-its ourselves, providing these to various underprivileged groups and asking them to write down their wishes and needs. Collecting the 3000 post-its with underprivileged wishes, we projected them in accordance with the design of an actual thousand-dollar bill. We created a gigantic poster of “Wish Bill,” measuring 240cm in width and 210cm in height. This poster was displayed at department stores.
Outcome
The Wish Bill attracted 25+ media companies covering the story, and soon became a hot topic on social media. It inspired people to make donations to United Way, resulting in a remarkable 416% increase in the donation rate compared to the previous year. Furthermore, numerous enterprises also made donations to United Way, and cooperated with us to showcase the Wish Bill, providing the opportunity for more people to witness the invaluable help that a donation to United Way can bring.
