The invitation brought to life the key question of the event: How should I deal with profit? We sent the invitation letter with a 5 Euro bill and asked the recipient to do whatever they wanted with it (after they had faxed it back to us as confirmation of attendance – we had made a list of the serial numbers and recipients). How would they deal with this request? One thing was certain: the mailing would not go unnoticed. The recipient would feel bound to reply.
Outcome
We sent out 110 invitations. So far (mid-March 2003) we have had 35 respondents. 12 of them have accepted the invitation. The rest have given us extensive explanations of why they cannot attend, and in most cases have sent the 5 Euro bills back.
