Overview

Why is this work relevant for Music Entertainment?

If you know the world was ending, how and who would you want to spend it with?

This video's nostalgic visuals explore these themes in a timeless and culturally relevant fashion where a mushroom cloud blast rolls across a world where lovers, parents, friends, and family have accepted the inevitable. The relevance comes from finding new ways to emotionally affect its viewers in a spectacular way, but also comment on the state of affairs that are unfolding in our world today.

Background

The situation is the world is ending and people have accepted their fate and find the beauty in spending their final moments, not in fright, but in happiness by spending it with those they love.

The brief and objective was finding an unexpected way to interpret the songs lyrics and emotionally impact viewers in a new and original way for a ballad style song.

Describe the strategy & insight

The video is meant to also that we are all one community and living through the same struggles and to have empathy for one another. It's diversity is meant to show that we are all one.

Describe the creative idea

The creative idea revolves around people spending their final moments on earth happy in the company of those they love as a mushroom cloud rips across the earth.

It's a sentimental song and we wanted to tap into the emotion of finding happiness through grief in an original way. This was to complement showcasing the band in a new adult light as much of their fan base has grown up.

It was also an outlet for Ukrainian director Ivanna Borin to find a way to indirectly comment on the situation and destruction her country faces on a daily basis.

Describe the craft & execution

The implementation started when the band had to shoot a video within a week due to scheduling. So directors Ivanna and Frank Borin put together a scenario where they were able to shoot such a vast and epic video mostly in one location to maximize the the two shoots days and also make it seems like it was filmed in many different states.

VFX turnaround was quick as well with edit and VFX taking place in the course of 3 weeks.

Describe the results

The results of the video have led to almost 2 million views on YouTube and a best music video shortlist/nomination at the Shots Awards in Los Angeles taking place in May. The video has been hailed as one of the band's best videos and helped the band seamlessly transition for being a younger band to a more mature band.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

While being an emotional piece that looks at the emotional side to such a big catastrophic event, this is also a way of Ivanna Borin's way of commenting on the emotional toll the war is taking on the people of her home country of Ukraine.
