Overview

Background:

Globally, about 2.2 billion people are affected by vision loss or even blindness, and in China, 1 in 80 people are visually impaired, totaling more than 17 million people.

In 2022, the Alibaba Health design teaam launched China's first Braille phonetic font "Alibaba Health Font", hoping to build a bridge for the visually impaired to communicate with the world. The most important feature being care. the design team corresponds Braille with Chinese Pinyin and characters one by one based on Chinese Braille standards.

Anyone can easily master the use and understand the meaning of the Braille equivalent in just 2 steps. This initiative will greatly reduce the difficulty for designers to apply the accessible design.

At the same time, the design team expects more and more pharmaceutical and packaging designers to use the Font, bringing great convenience to visually impaired people's lives.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

In Chinese society, it is difficult for the public to master Braille because of its complexity. For example, there are 200,000 approved drugs in China, but there is no Braille, which is a big security problem.

Not only is the issue of convenience, but in terms of social equity, the access to education, employment opportunities, personal safety in public life, and general social respect for visually impaired people are all lower than for non-blind people, and the population base is large, over 17 million.

In response to UNESCO's call, in recent years the Chinese government has continued to encourage and greatly develop accessible public services, and to promote equality in Chinese society.
