CampaignDescription

au developed kids’ shoes “FUMM” which links with the parent’s smartphone and lets you play with footsteps.

With the concept of “Turn everyday life into a place to play”, it aimed for new lifestyle solution offered by mobile phones.

Execution

A total of 4 sensors, pressure-sensitive sensor and acceleration sensor which measures the movement of the feet, air pressure sensor which measures the height of the feet and color sensor which detects the color of the ground, are built into FUMM shoes.

Fun sounds are played from the parent’s smartphone to the movement of children when they run or jump.

It also has a reassuring watching function for parents where an alarm goes off when the smartphone and FUMM shoes are separated.

It can be changed to various modes when the channel is changed.

You can become a dinosaur and stomp the ground, or you can become a train and run on white lines pretended to be a railway, or you can climb a mountain while playing the piano.

All children have to do is wear FUMM shoes and run around the city.

FUMM turns everyday life into a place to play.

Outcome

FUMM shoes have been much talked about as an innovative product of a communication company.

It acquired the same amount of exposure as conventional smartphone terminal presentations.

It is evaluated as an advanced wearable device along with iWatch of Apple and google glass of Google.

KDDI established a brand as an innovative communications company.

Strategy

For development, au collaborated with New Balance which is a professional in making kids’s shoes.

Synopsis

In Japan (and some other countries), children’s playing environment is changing.

Due to high convenience, population of young families is concentrated in metropolitan areas.

On the other hand, there are not many places to play in metropolitan areas due to pieces of land being small.

Recently, parks are more regulated, and small children cannot freely play outdoors.

These are social problems.

au which is one of the major mobile phone and communication companies in Japan thought of differentiating itself from competitors by solving this problem with smartphones which parents always carry.
