We created an affordable candy that helps cancer patients regain their appetite because they can feel the real flavor of food again instead of the metallic taste after a chemotherapy treatment. This candy is made of a wild berry known as the "miracle fruit", which grows in the coastal region of Ecuador, able to regenerate taste buds. At only $0.15 per count, is a low cost that guarantees a nationwide distribution by the Ministry of Public Health, private sector and associated cancer organizations.

Execution

When a cancer patient tries the candy before mealtime it can taste again the real flavor of food for up to 60 minutes. It’s a friendlier-than-pills way to get cancer patients enjoy their mealtime again, regain their appetite and maintain a proper nutrition when they need the most.

Outcome

Savor Saver is a product relevant to the medical society and the very first candy to help a cancer patient's nutrition as it makes easier for them to get the energy they need and enjoy mealtimes again.

100% of patients who ate the candy gave testimony of the positive effects at mealtime moment. Many patients confirmed the elimination of the metallic taste and in others food tasted food like again.

The study was for children patients only but because of the positive results the Ministry of Public Health and cancer organizations are extending the project to adult patients also.

In addition to the medical studies we conducted, we are working with a team of 6 professionals of different fields (epidimiology, genetics and oncology) with the objective that Savor Saver becomes the first Ecuadorian homeopthatic acknowledged by the international medical society.

Savor Saver Candy is a game-changer product for cancer patients going through a chemotherapy treatment because it regenerates the taste buds affected by chemotherapy to help them regain the sense of taste and maintain a proper nutrition to endure such a strong treatment.

2015 to 2017: Conducted a research along with Agroindustrial engineers to fully understand its effects and then complemented it with additional studies done by the American Society of Clinical Oncology to determine its efficacy on cancer patients that are going through a chemotherapy treatment. After multiple tests it was concluded that a freeze-drying process was the best alternative to preserve the fruit’s properties.

Feb 2017 to April 2017: Manufacturing process assessed by Confiteca, the biggest candy company in the country and oncologists to elaborate a candy formula that is sugar-free and with no side effects.

May 2017 to June 2017: Focus groups with cancer patients that have treated or to be treated with chemotherapy to test the product intrinsics.

August 2017 to October 2017: Branding development process. Naming, logo, packaging.

November 2017 to date: Distribution of the candy at private and public hospitals, nationwide.

Synopsis

For more than 40.000 adults and children going through a chemotherapy treatment in Ecuador, food doesn’t taste like food. One of the treatment’s side effects is the degeneration of taste buds, which causes loss of appetite on patients as everything they eat has a metallic taste. Cancer not only affects the patient but also affects family economy. The minimum wage in the country is $385 and despite several financial aids by the government and cancer organizations, cancer still affects their budget due to long treatment periods (4 year aproximately).
