The best-selling Xbox Kinect title of the holiday season was created by a brand: Nike+ Kinect Training.

We started in 2010 with a vision to democratize personal training, merging Nike’s expertise in training with Microsoft’s Kinect tracking technology.

There was no benchmark for fitness capability, so we partnered with sports scientists to invent one. Algorithmic intelligence means every workout is fresh and personalized to you. By tracking your movement to a skeletal level we deliver precise feedback exactly when you need it. Live video streamed challenges bringing social training to your home.

Nike+ Kinect Training gives everyone a personal trainer 24/7, helping the world to get fit and stay fit and creating meaningful connections with Nike every day.

Execution

Nike+ Kinect Training was introduced to the world at E3, the world’s leading expo of future interactive entertainment, and reached millions more via the live broadcast on Spike TV.

A targeted cinema trailer followed, helping build momentum.

From October 30, Nike+ Kinect Training launched in 36 countries.

Leveraging Xbox Live, we gave consumers their first opportunity to trial the experience and get their first fitness assessment. Live demo events in key cities were held for influencers, and were hosted by the title’s actual personal trainers, Alex and Marie.

Our social and integrated marketing campaign featuring the Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson and pro football player DeSean Jackson demonstrated how the product can work for athletes at every level.

Our mobile experience ensured that the trainers were always with you to provide that extra motivation.

Outcome

Our objective was to give everyone access to their own personal trainer, creating a new service for Nike and a new relationship between brand and consumer.

In the short time following release, Nike+ Kinect Training became the #1 selling Kinect title of holiday 2012.

Nike+ Kinect Training is an expandable training platform. After launch we conducted consumer research. Based on feedback, we created and released through downloadable content an entirely new set of workouts that would seamlessly integrate in the user’s workout program.

Tracking progress is the number one motivator for athletes. So we built an entirely new measure of fitness called Fuel Print. Fuel Print represents your fitness makeup. You can pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses, and compare yourself to athletes everywhere. This platform can act independently, and take on a life beyond Nike+ Kinect Training, becoming a universal benchmark for athletic fitness.
