Background

In summer 2021, a refugee crisis unfolded at the Poland-Belarus border, involving people from Iraq, Syria, and other countries lured by the Lukashenko regime's promise of an illegal, but easy EU entry. Used as pawns in a hybrid war, refugees were pushed back and forth between Poland and Belarus, wandering in dense forests.

Storytel decided to create an audio report about ordinary Poles living near the border with Belarus, who decided to go into the forest and, bypassing uniformed patrols, bring aid to refugees in need. The topic was difficult and polarizing, but since these people were never heard (government TV broadcast only government propaganda) someone had to give them a voice. The brief was to activate Poles on the topic and promote the audio report available on Storytel.

Idea

The creative idea thus became a cell phone content format. Let text messages, Signal conversations, gallery videos and photos, web browser history and maps speak. Let's let people know the truth from the source itself. Let people who have believed the government media see the truth without narrative, without a hidden agenda. We wanted everyone to turn their phone, for a few moments, into Anna's phone and see what it was like to secretly help other people while constantly being exposed to legal consequences.

Strategy

Since the task was to promote a reportage on a topic that is socially polarizing, we felt that in the promotion we had to use a form that has characteristics similar to reportage, that is, it presents facts, shows a fragment of the world and leaves the evaluation to the viewer. On the other hand, in hours of interviews with real residents of the no-go-zone, we learned that for those helping refugees, the smartphone was the primary tool for rescue. Not only did they send each other Google Maps pins with the location of those in need of help, but they also organized themselves with the help of the Signal app, took photos and videos of the actual state of affairs in the border forests, translated from Arabic to Polish, seek for field medical treatment information.

Execution

A specially designed mobile site forced full screen on the viewer's phone. Your wallpaper, your apps - their place was replaced by Anna's wallpaper with a pre-crisis photo and her apps, which she had to use over time not to chat, but to save lives. In text message conversations with the family, one can see how the conservative father, stupefied by government propaganda, pulls away from his daughter upon hearing that she is going into the woods to help. Which friends give her support and which ones doubt the sense of her actions. The browser's story shows the desperate search for ways to decontaminate wounds, lightweight sleeping bags or ways to deal with hypothermia. It's all there, all you have to do is tap your finger, just like you do every day. But this time it's different. This time it's not your phone.

Outcome

An increase of 2% in unaided brand awareness.

Donating 50k to two key foundations helping refugees in Poland - the Ocalenie Foundation and the Border Group.
