Execution

For the sound design two elements were essential: a state-of-the-art horror movie climax and our comedic twist. But compared to typical Hollywood movies, 40 seconds is a short amount of time. That’s why our climax had to give you chills right away. It combines typical genre elements like Pizzicato violins, whooshes and drones with ultra-realistic sounds like heavy rain that feels like it’s coming right through your clothes, cracking branches and loud grunts of our axe man. Sometimes so close, you get the feeling he’s right next to you. The dark atmosphere is underlined by a subfrequented bass line accompanied by scratchy ripped violins. To highlight our comedic twist, we break the climax at the highest point, reduce the score and the rain to a minimum and replace all the dangerous sounds with the calmness and almost silence of the car’s interior – which makes the axe man look pitiful.
