Background

Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world. As a result, Australians know the risk of sun exposure but

research showed that an increasing number of people were getting sunburnt. In the Summer‘15 there were almost 25% more

getting sunburnt each weekend than four years prior. So what had changed? Australians believed they knew the answer – they

were wearing sunscreen but it didn’t work. Images of blistered children accompanied by stories from distraught parents flooded

social media and news reports. While many sunscreen manufacturers were included in the stories, as the market leader,

Banana Boat felt this acutely. Banana Boat products are tested to comply with Australian SPF standards, but in the courtroom

of public opinion, the damage was done. By the end of Summer’15 Banana Boat’s credibility had taken a significant hit.

Execution

The book was published for distribution to Australian families. It was launched at Australia’s most famous beach – Bondi Beach

– a with a reading from well-known mum and TV star Madeline West, and was available for parents to order to order via

mammamia.com, supported by a digital and social campaign.
