Description
As ‘Become Legend' was the tagline since the original game launched – and since each player's story is unique to them – we decided to show players exactly how their personal legend had grown over the past year.
‘The Legend of You' gave gamers a way to generate a custom trailer that built up THEIR story using their actual in-game stats. The trailers showed the things they'd seen so far, the achievements they'd accomplished, and the enemy they now face – all in an easily shareable format.
Execution
The Legend of You lived on the Destiny website (www.destinythegame.com/legend-of-you [no longer active]), and gamers simply typed in their gamer ID, which would begin the process of generating their custom video. These videos told the story of each player’s individual legend – using their name and their stats to tell their story in an epic trailer format. After viewing the one-minute film, they could share it as well as view their friends’ videos.
Outcome
With no paid media support, over a million videos were generated in just over 28 hours after first going live—driven purely by fan excitement, shares, and support.
In the two-week period the experience was live, 1.33M total videos were made, with 1700 videos being made per minute at its peak.
Launching shortly before the expansion pack was released, the experience accounted for 15 percent of the total Destiny conversation during the Taken King launch window.
