Description

Use Steve Harvey’s epic flub at the Miss Universe pageant to point out that Verizon had also messed up.

Execution

In mid-January, Publicis Seattle received a call from T-Mobile saying they wanted to run a commercial during the Super Bowl, which was just weeks away, to point out Verizon’s mistake. Forty-eight hours later, the script was written, sold-in, and we were on the phone with Steve Harvey. And just a few days later, we were in Los Angeles watching the paint dry on a life size scale of the CGI ramp that Verizon had in their commercial. The shoot took place in a single day, and post wrapped in a week. The spot shipped in early February and aired during the second quarter of Super Bowl 50.

Outcome

The spot ran during the prime second quarter of Super Bowl 50. It was one of the top three most-viewed ads of the game, and was ranked top two for trending topics during the game — behind only #SB50! After the game, it was talked about on Good Morning America, CNBC, NPR, Sports Illustrated, Today Show, Buzzfeed, People, and ESPN...just to name a few. In just a single airing, the thirty-second spot helped T-Mobile garner over 6 billion media impressions, and, of course, set the record straight about T-Mobile’s coverage.
