Background

Every year the city of São Paulo suffers from uncountable flood spots. They always happen in the same spots, and without public policy, the damages are irrecoverable, whereas material (loss of cars, bikes, and others) and human(death rates increasing 38% a year).

Idea

Floods have always been a headache for the citizens of são Paulo, and the biggest issue is, even with decades of recurrent episodes the drivers are always caught in them. But there is another thing that is always scattered throughout São Paulo and close to the flooding spots: JCDecaux Billboards.

We've decided to integrate a complex crossing-data system using thousands of JCDecaux billboards as a display. Using real-time data to warn the drivers.

An idea that helps to save time, money, and most importantly, it saves lives.

Strategy

We've gathered different data from different sources. First, we've looked out for the most known flooding spots in the city, then we've crossed the locations with the mereological and rain data. After that, we've mapped the entire city using JCDecaux billboards locations reference to define the spots with the most traffic, visibility, and those which are close to flooding spots.

Execution

Crossing meteorological data with sensors installed in storm drains, weather stations, and the city's flood-prone spots and we had everything we needed to create and develop the project, unless how to warn the drivers about the dangers on their routes. There where's the idea came from, the fact that JCDecaux Billboards are not only scattered throughout the city but some of them are still close to flooding spots. All that we'd to do was to combine all that data within the JCDecaux system, to warn in real-time everyone in the streets of São Paulo.

Outcome

With more than 2.000.000 impressions throughout the city of são Paulo, the project had a huge impact on the drivers and the citizen’s lives. Helping them directly to avoid flooding areas and to stay safe while driving.

São Paulo's traffic department has endorsed the project and it's likely to become an annual tool for both city Hall and JCDecaux.
