Background

Gatorade Gx is a holistic sports fuel customization platform that combines cutting-edge science with newly designed equipment and tracking technologies to provide fueling recommendations specific to individuals. This innovative platform will change the way athletes of all levels hydrate now and into the future.

Through Gx, athletes can create their personalized fueling plan based on their unique needs, preferences, and performance goals. The platform offers a range of products that can be customized with various flavors, electrolytes, and caffeine levels. Additionally, Gatorade has developed a range of new equipment and tracking technologies that work seamlessly with the Gx platform, including the Gx Sweat Patch, which provides real-time data, helping them achieve and maintain peak performance.

Gatorade Gx is more than just a product line; it's an ecosystem designed to provide athletes with what they need to perform at their best.

Idea

As with all Gatorade products, we wanted Gx to promote personalization, sustainability, health, and wellness, providing athletes with both overarching and focused approaches to sports nutrition. This allows us to continue to grow our understanding of what athletes need from the Connected Gx system.

We wanted to make Gatorade more than a hydration beverage, we wanted it to fuel growth. Working in harmony, the sweat patch, water bottle, and app, help athletes to prepare, workout, and repair. This customized system offers personalized recommendations to optimize their performance. By leveraging data and research, Gatorade Gx provides athletes with a comprehensive understanding of their needs, ensuring they receive the appropriate recommendations from the matrix.

Communicating the message ‘hydration is power’ was never going to be easy, that’s why we collaborated with some of the best athletes in the world to co-create limited edition bottles, showcasing our commitment to innovative sports nutrition solutions.

Execution

Our products are born in the lab and proven on the field, ensuring effectiveness.

The Gx ecosystem offers athletes a one-stop-shop to prepare, workout, and repair, providing fueling recommendations along the way. This is achieved through the Gx sweat patch and Gx bottle which generate the data shown in the Gx app.

To ensure the effectiveness of Gx, we leveraged a design thinking process to understand what athletes want from their tools. This innovative approach provided a 360° comprehensive platform that truly understands the human body. We also offer a digital weigh-in station, an influencer app, and a smart cap to ensure access to everything one could need for optimum performance.

With 11 NFL partner teams, five NBA partner teams, 10 NCAA partner teams, and eight Global partner teams using varying levels of the Gx Pro system in 2016, we are confident in our ability to empower athletes worldwide.

Outcome

Gatorade Gx achieved break-through innovation by developing a unique approach and providing a new point of distribution. In 2022, Gx drove $90MM in sales, experiencing a +63% year-on-year growth rate versus 2021.

The expansion of the portfolio to include the Gatorade Gx collaboration bottles created a step-change for the business. Total audience reach increased by 58% compared to the previous 12 months, and Gx more than doubled its female audience share. Furthermore, retail partner traffic increased by 45% versus the previous year.

The Gx bottle is the best-selling item at key sporting goods retailers and has three out of the top four best-selling items within mass-sporting goods retailers. In less than eight weeks post-launch, Gx became the best-selling item within the general merchandise set at a key grocery customer.

Gatorade Gx has driven over 500MM views on TikTok, with #Gatorade achieving a total of 2.6B views on the platform.
