Background
One of the most significant festivals in Indian culture, Diwali, the festival of light celebrates freedom from darkness.
Thus, there is a tradition of lighting earthen lamps. The makers and sellers of these humble Indian earthen lamps wait the entire year to make a livelihood out of Diwali, but due to modernization and recent e-commerce boom, people have moved away from buying from them.
There are 10 million such people who are affected by this and hardly earn 1 $ a day.
Execution
Diwali, the festival of lights, is a visual delight. Houses, offices, shops every building decorated with electric lights and earthen lamps.
The biggest challenge before us from the art perspective was to replicate the grandeur of Diwali on a set, and looking at the magnitude of it, we decided against the idea of a set and settled for a real marketplace in the heart of Gurugram, the capital city of Haryana.
Real-locations always come up with their own set of challenges, but not this time.
The marketplace beautifully captured the essence of Diwali, depicting the contrast between the rich and poor, highlighting the behavioural shift in Indian consumers.
Shots highlighting the plight of street vendors wherein the customers were ignoring the old lady were filmed in real time, with real customers.
And together we were able to bring in the authenticity of Diwali.
