Background
Our team at Google set out to design and build our first ever flagship retail space in Manhattan to allow our customers to experience all of our great products firsthand and provide one-on-one support. It was a four year project that ultimately opened in June 2021. The store is an 8800 square foot, two level space in the heart of the Chelsea / Meatpacking neighborhood of Manhattan.
Idea
We had to develop a design concept that could translate the Google brand into a permanent physical space for our customers. The ultimate goal was to be magical, friendly, human, inviting and to create a space that felt like no other consumer electronics space in the world.
Strategy
Create a new brick and mortar retail location for one of the biggest tech brands in the world but do so in a way that’s completely unique to Google. Reconsider what a consumer electronics store should look and feel like, from materials to experiences to helpful customer service and beyond. Design and build in a completely sustainable way.
Execution
The execution and approach took over 4 years. We considered hundreds of designs and layouts and ultimately landed on using warm, organic and inviting textures and colors that were all incredibly sustainable. We achieved LEED Platinum for our space (one of only 214 retail stores in the world to have done so).
Outcome
150+ press articles. Featured in CNN, NYTimes, Fortune, Wallpaper, Dezeen, Metropolis, etc. 8800 square foot flagship store - Google’s first. LEED Platinum Sustainability Certification. Four interactive installations. Eighteen transparent LED screens. Events space.
