Description

In the 1960s, Charles and Ray Eames created a 50-foot-long timeline of the history of mathematics as part of their exhibition Mathematica: A World of Numbers… and Beyond. IBM published the timeline poster — titled "Men of Modern Mathematics"— and for more than 20 years, distributed free copies of the timeline to schools around the world. Our objectives were to re-imagine the 2-by-12-foot poster for the digital age, deliver an immersive experience, and preserve the beauty and integrity of the original vision. The campaign was designed to reinvigorate a piece of history that has long sought to shape public perception of math and science education in America. To support the launch of support the launch of Minds of Modern Mathematics, we engaged our audience in a number of different ways and channels, igniting the conversation by mobilizing the online design, math and science communities through blogger outreach, e-PR, a microsite, and a 2-minute video on YouTube. Across all our efforts, we weaved IBM and the Eameses into conversations in a way that celebrates math and science.

The iPad app launched on Thursday, April 05, 2012. In just one week, the app received coverage across major online outlets, including Wired, Forbes, Gizmodo, New York Times and Creativity. Four days after the launch, Gizmodo featured Minds of Modern Mathematics as the app of the day.

The app has been featured in the #1 “New and Noteworthy” spot in the App Store, garnering an average rating of 4.5 stars across 69 reviews. Reviewers have described the app as “Fascinating and fantastic”, “Astonishing,” and “Amazingly informative.” It has quickly moved up the most downloaded list to become the 3rd most downloaded iPad app in the Education category. Our plan is to continue to expand the program to showcase the achievements of mathematicians who have made significant contributions in every branch of math and science.
