Execution

The film starts by syncing your mobile and desktop browsers so that they can communicate via the WebSocket protocol in Google Chrome. After authorizing access to your desktop webcam, the film can track your phone in real space. As the film begins, you are able to cast a "virtual projection" on the screen by holding your mobile device in front of the webcam. The result is an interactive film that you control not with the mouse or keyboard, but by moving your phone in the air. A separate section allows participants to experiment with dozens of effects from the film.

Outcome

'Just A Reflektor' received widespread international press recognition across music, technology and general media. The Guardian called it "a tour de force of digital art" while WIRED magazine named it the top musical moment of 2013 with “one of the most mind-bendingly interactive and innovative [videos] of the year.”
