Description

We developed a comprehensive integrated partnership with Under Armour for Ridley Scott's The Martian that started with a simple idea: what if astronauts were sponsored by brands in the year 2035? The resulting campaign positioned the Under Armour as a provider of next-generation training gear designed for optimal mobility, comfort, advanced biometric data, and protection in the most demanding environment of all - space.

“Leave Your Mark" is a celebration of those that understand that greatness isn’t in the destination itself, but in the journey to get there. It’s in the constant repetition of drills and training and preparation. It’s waking up early, while everyone else is asleep. It’s those extra strength and endurance workouts to prepare for the challenges of long-duration space flight. It’s the hundreds of hours spent drilling for every scenario imaginable, because when you’re an astronaut, you have to train like survival is your only option.

Execution

After realizing the initial idea, we immediately knew we wanted Under Armour to be a part of the campaign. Our partners at RSA reached out to Droga5 (Under Armour’s ad agency of record) on our behalf to see if there was any interest in being a content partner on this film. From there, everyone worked together to create something that felt authentic to both the film and the brand.

Outcome

For Under Armour, the resulting campaign positioned the company as a provider of next-generation training gear designed for optimal mobility, comfort, advanced biometric data, and protection in the most demanding environment of all - space.

It was a seamless brand integration and a win-win on both sides. The movie's promotional campaign needed a way to introduce the astronauts while establishing their credibility as incredible athletes. Meanwhile Under Armour is always a thought leader in athletic performance and innovation and with the most interesting athletes. So featuring the astronauts in an Under Armour campaign was a great way for both sides to achieve their goals. Under Armour isn't an interruption into the movie's fictional world - it's realistic and actually adds credibility.
