Execution

In order for us to respond faster to emergency situations, we modified our existing solar light, and created the Light Box. We built around a single-watt LED bulb, able to operate for 10 hours on a single charge. A case template was designed so anyone, anywhere can make it out of nearly anything. The circuitry was simplified with the maker community of My Shelter Foundation. We wanted to make it so simple, even a child could put it together. It took us five months of reverse engineering our old solar light. Plus a dozen iterations, and user testing, to come up with a design that addressed all our needs. The new product weighs 500 grams (from two pounds). And is now half the original cost at $10USD or less per piece.

Using materials that are recyclable and accessible, we were able to keep investments to a minimum. Cutting down manufacturing and logistical efforts by an estimated 50%. Around $5,000USD was spent to finalize the design for field-testing.

This new design was introduced to a global audience through literoflight.org. Schematics with instructions are easily downloaded from the site. This encourages more people to learn about sustainability and technology, and maybe one day learn to build their own.

Outcome

We are targeting to complete field-testing by July of this year. Mass production shall be done immediately after we refine the design based on initial consumer feedback. Light Box kits shall be ready for deployment at the start of the wet season.

In parallel to field testing, technological updates are underway for product improvement.

- Innovation. Development of better printed circuit boards, longer-lasting batteries, and brighter lights.

- Iteration. Product schematics are flexible so feedback from field tests can be easily implemented.

- Eduation. Online access of materials on the website can be used as teaching materials.

- Participation. Partner with educational institutions to spread knowledge on solar so more people can learn about sustainability and technology. And become part of the solution.

- Maturity. New innovations and better designs may eventually render the current light obsolete. Improvements in energy conservation practices, more advanced components, and feedback from field tests can eventually give rise to a more cost effective and efficient light.
