Description

Being deaf is not a disability. This film challenges this misconception by telling the inspiring story of Chris Fonseca, a deaf dance instructor. The film opens with Chris in his native London neighborhood where he picks up his inspiration for choreography, then follows him into his dance studio where he instructs his deaf students how to translate beats in dance moves, and finally into a nightclub where he and his friends takeover the dance floor. Along the way we hear from Chris, his real students and his friends, who together prove dancing is a universal language and that nothing should get in the way of having a good time.

Execution

When we decided to feature Chris Fonseca in this film, we made the decision to cast his real friends and students in the film to add to our authenticity. We started with initial Skype and phone calls to identify his inner-circle is – which seems simple enough except that a translator had to be present in order for us to communicate. It was truly an eye-opening experience for the creative team to witness first-hand the difficulties in simple conversation with deaf people. Upon arriving in London, we held an open casting call for more deaf people from the community. Some were experienced dancers while others had never danced before – but all of them had an amazing story to share. We were proud to have featured them as the deaf students in the final film.
