Description
"The Developer" is a musical based on Lorde’s #1 hit song “Royals” that centers around a mysterious super star who abandons the trappings of his fame. Instead, he uses his influence, and his Samsung Note 3, to accomplish something much more meaningful.
The film is a musical dramatization of the real life actions of Lionel Messi’s foundation. Its sole mission is to bring the joy of football to inner-city areas where parks are an all-too-often overlooked luxury.
Execution
We set out to dramatize true-life actions of the Lionel Messi Foundation mission to bring football to underprivileged areas. But instead, we decided to tell that story from the perspective of Lionel and the children he helps.
We knew that using dialogue to tell this story, in the form of a global television commercial, could turn out to be very problematic. To overcome that, we wanted to find a soundtrack that we could speak with – communicating both uncertainty and joy. A modern Oliver Twist – a modern musical.
So with that as our goal, we cast exclusively from the world’s most famous theater production, Les Misérables.
All of the film’s principles were from the London cast of Les Mis; we flew them to Madrid for several intense days of rehearsals. There, we adapted Lorde’s soon-to-be mega hit “Royals” to fit the group. Once on set, we wanted to hold true to the musical medium - all performances were recorded live on location, with zero studio time.
In the end, the pop culture influence of Lorde’s powerful song brought to life through this amazing cast of young West End talent that gives this film its unique flavor in an often flat global market.
