Execution

In the film, three real girls face bullying for their differences but find confidence in football. One girl, ethnically Japanese, faces bullying from classmates and rigid expectations from her family at home. Another girl is ethnically Korean or “Zainichi,” (a group that has been discriminated against in Japan for decades, often choosing to hide their identity) and struggles to fit in when she transfers from a Korean school to a Japanese school. The third protagonist is half-Black and always feels like she stands out too much, putting up with uncomfortable questions and teasing. The girls find an outlet through their love of football and friendship with each other and their teammates. Ultimately, through the confidence they gain from sports, each is able to begin to assert her identity and her place in Japan’s future.
