Description

Thanks to the achievements reached by humankind, the way we communicate has evolved really fast. So fast that some of the classic technologies we grew up with will soon be forgotten.

TIM, the first telecommunications company in Italy, asked us to preserve this precious heritage for the future generations.

“The History of Connection” is an interactive experience for desktop and mobile. A spectacular timeline that lets everyone explore all the achievements reached by humanity in terms of innovation, showcasing documents, pictures, devices, interviews and curiosities collected by TIM through the years.

The idea is to explore this unique timeline from a breathtaking point of view, by navigating inside the only element that all these technologies have in common: the cable.

Thanks to this experience, users can interact with those iconic devices that belong to the past and made the history of telecommunications.

Execution

“The History of Connection” is a website showcasing the technological achievements in the history of telecommunications in a never-before-seen interactive experience.

Users can navigate this unique timeline from a breathtaking point of view, inside a cable.

The navigation in first person view ensures an immersive experience.

The UI and UX elements are designed to guarantee the best experience on every device.

While seeing the design of the cable evolve age after age, thanks to the most innovative 3D and WebGL technologies, people can find hotspots with historical documents: pictures, devices, interviews and curiosities collected by TIM through the years.

“The History of Connection” is split in different chapters.

At the beginning of each, users are invited to interact with an iconic device, representing that time period.

These devices have been illustrated in a modern, original and captivating style. We designed a 3D navigation, that allows users to view more details about each device while they navigate around it.

In this way user can try putting a coin in a public phone, connecting a call with an old switchboard, aligning an optical fiber, and so on.

Outcome

After the opening of its historical archive, TIM confirms its commitment in the promotion of digital culture in Italy. Although this website has been launched very recently and we don’t have collected exhaustive information about the results yet, we already achieved our first biggest result. Thanks to this experience, the most important technologies of the past will not be forgotten. Future generations will be able to learn the telecommunications history with a unique online experience and interact in first person with the most important devices that made the history of telecommunications.
