Description
Develop a series of signature posters, which exemplify the theatre’s season of ‘imagination.’ Key visuals, must feature ensemble cast members as well as help tell the story of each play.
Execution
Reading all the plays and distilling them to their bare essentials exposed each story's morality, symbolism, theme and complex meaning that helped inform graphic direction for both photography and illustration.
Outcome
Chicago’s Steppenwolf is known as a non-traditional theatre company, which has world-class ensemble membership (John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, Joan Allen, William Petersen, Tracy Letts). It's imperative for theatre collateral to reflect it's atypical point-of-view through its marketing and advertising (building wallscapes, street banners, posters, signage) to help distinguish itself from competition. We chose to bring together two A-list Chicago art professionals to deliver a uniquely edgy, unexpected, sophisticated style of image-making which created a coherent brand campaign that exemplified both plays of the season as well as the Steppenwolf theatre itself from the safe-and-simple/expected approach of more conservative Chicago theatres.
