Description

Bikers are 50 times more likely to be killed on the road than drivers. But they know the risks and reminding them of this fact would have little effect. So, unlike most DfT campaigns, we didn’t try to shock. Instead we inspired them to be safer through further training. But how do you do that when they already think they are good enough? They passed their road test after all.

We showed them that even a world champion could improve. Chaz Davies rides in the World Superbike Championship. He also amazingly only passed his road test last May. A world-class rider with little road experience was a great way to challenge bikers’ perception of their own skills. We sent Chaz on a further training course with regular riders from around the UK to create 4 mini-documentaries.

Execution

The challenge to our animators was to turn static 3D images made from a point cloud into emotionally disturbing, moving action.

Using an architectural survey technique known as Lidar scanning, lasers were shot into the environment to create a point cloud model.

By combining up to 40 scans of each location we built up entire 3D scenes, of buildings, people, landscapes and country roads.

The separate scenes were then combined to form a narrative, but remained static.

Moving elements, such as the car and tractor, were scanned to build up incredibly accurate models, which were then rigged with controls.

The controls enabled animators to move the scanned vehicles realistically through point cloud environments.

Subtle and unique movements of each vehicle were simulated, such as banking and suspension.

Extra animation was added to replicate moving along the uneven surfaces of a country road. The animators then had to convincingly represent the appearance of high speed.

The animation of each vehicle was then transferred to the Lidar point clouds and rendered out within the environments, and composited into the final shots.

Finally, detail such as moving wheels was added, as well as flying debris when the car and tractor eventually collided.
