Description
Instead of viewing the series as soley an opening title followed by footage, VICE wanted to approach the entire series and its episodes as a UX-like system with humanity — a wayfinder for viewers to enter stories and segments.
Execution
Through dynamic camera movements the show open takes the viewer through literal film strips-like streams that are specific to each VICE episode. Through this language, the viewer is taken through an introduction of the stories they will experience during tonight’s show, all culminating into the final title – as well as a cohesive transition between the two stories that exist within a singular episode. Each element within the stream — from the type and footage — is editable and customized by episode within this system.
Outcome
VICE on HBO continues to pick up more viewership resulting in more specials, more episodes and even a nightly news program in the works — all of which will use and be influenced by this new graphics system.
