Description

The forces of Average are out there. It’s that little voice in your head convincing you to sleep though your morning workout. It’s that whisper in your ear that says, “Surely, one more chocolate cookie won’t do any harm.” It’s the thousand of little excuses that lull you into settling for feeling Average when it comes to your health and fitness. Average is coming for you. But don’t worry. With a little extra effort and some help from The General Nutrition Company, you can always beat it. GNC. Beat Average.

Execution

Music: Quietly inspiring track builds throughout.

Open on an average runner jogging on a suburban street. Inexplicably, he is not moving forward.

VO: It’s out there.

Cut to a young woman asleep in bed. The camera pushes closer revealing a model of her brain. As she twitches in her sleep, the alarm clock cord is mysteriously yanked out of the wall causing the alarm clock to shut off.

VO: It’s that voice in your head, making sure you sleep through that yoga class.

Cut to a woman in an corporate kitchen being tempted by a box of donut holes. She takes one and then leaves the kitchen. Several donut holes pursue her down the hall.

VO: Convincing you that one donut hole couldn’t possibly lead to another.

Cut to a heavyset man at a pool party, sadly studying a photo of himself on his camera. The camera pushes inside the inner workings of the camera, revealing a small blob of pink fat that is secretly being added to the photo.

VO: Average. Average blames the camera for those extra ten pounds…

Cut to a man on a treadmill as he pushes several buttons that will cause the treadmill to go impossibly slow.

VO: …and sets the treadmill on mosey… or stroll… or loiter.

Cut to a woman on a track. It’s a bright, sunny day but there is a single tiny cloud in the sky. A single raindrop hits her shoulder causing her to abandon her run.

VO: Need an excuse? Average has ‘em all.

Cut to a very crowded gym where we reveal five people attempting to run on one treadmill.

VO: Skip the gym. It’ll probably be too crowded anyway.

Cut back to the runner from the beginning, still not moving forward.

Cut to a young man on an escalator. It stops. He remains frozen in place, as if he doesn’t know how to walk up the stair.

VO: Average. Yeah, take it easy there, fella.

Cut to a series of shots of a young man repeatedly forgetting to workout.

VO: Average… has memory issues…

MAN: I forgot to work out.

MAN: I forgot to work out.

VO: …and memory issues.

MAN: My workout.

Cut to thousands of “participant” trophies rolling off the assembly line. Cut to a group of young swimmers each being handed one.

VO: Its crowning achievement? Everyone gets a trophy.

Cut to one of the young swimmers asleep in bed later that night as the trophy whispers to him.

TROPHY: Average is good.

The sleepy boy repeats the trophy’s line in his sleep.

BOY: Average is good.

Cut to our runner from the opening of the spot. He is still running in place, but suddenly gets the determination to charge forward, defying Average.

VO: No, Average is average. You can beat it.

TITLE CARD: BEAT AVERAGE™.

VO: And it starts at GNC.
