Description

We Are Blood is a 1hr 31min commercially-released, feature film that was released in August 2015 and in select theatres through September 2015. The entire film was two years in the making and is the first 4K Ultra-HD skateboarding film ever created.

Over the course of two years, the film was shot in urban, exotic and remote locations all around the world including Brazil, China, Barcelona, Dubai, and across the US. The film featured some of the most well known skate spots in the world and areas where no skateboard has ever touched. A highlight of the film is the Dubai section where a group of professional skateboarders are given the key to the city and access areas that have never been skated before like the heli-pad of the Burj Al Arab. Mountain Dew leveraged its relationship with Paul Rodriguez to take the helm as the narrator.

Execution

We kept the shell of We Are Blood similar to a traditional skate film grounded in innovative skate action. In order to have the film reach a more casual fan, we added in plot points with more human elements (the story of a deaf skater, a restoration of an old skate park). The production company was able to bring state of the art equipment and cinematography . In an industry dominated by handheld point and shoot cameras, we were the first to shoot skateboarding using a Phantom Flex camera mounted with a SHOTOVER F1 Gimbal on a helicopter. The film was shot exclusively in 4K/5K/6K with Red Dragons, Phantom Flex 4K’s, and a fleet of drones. To lend credibility to the film and reach a wider audience, we announced news of the venture at SXSW and released our first trailer. The film premiered at the Ace Theatre in LA with media.

Outcome

For We Are Blood, DEW and the production company are credited with not only making an exceptional piece of content, but for creating a feature-length film that breaks the mold of a highly influential medium that has been active for more than 50 years. The cultural impact that the film has had is unprecedented. Aside from its broad coverage in mainstream media outlets like The New York Times, LA Times, Hollywood Reporter, MTV, We Are Blood has been the most talked about project in the skate industry in years. Prior to its release, the film made the cover of every skateboard magazine/outlet, including Thrasher, Transworld Skateboarding and The Skateboard Mag. The online chatter has been a driving success. #WeAreBlood received over 35,000 mentions on Twitter and Instagram with100MM+ social media impressions. The trailer has received 14MM+ views. The film premiered as the #1 Sports, #2 Documentary and #11 Overall on iTunes.
