Description

“WOMEN: New Portraits” opened in London at the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station in January 2016, and evolved in each subsequent city, with new portraits added per market, making no two stops alike. Contextualizing the conversation, photographs of famous women as well as those not so famous were mixed together all sized the same, mounted on a single long wall.

All ten markets were determined based on uniqueness of exhibition space (a former women's prison, under a bridge, a defunct train station, an airport hanger) and volume of UBS clientele. Each market hosted the exhibition for three weeks, dedicating a few days to client-focused presentations given by Leibovitz and Gloria Steinem in which they were able to add context of exhibition while also also answering questions and meeting key UBS stakeholders.

Execution

WOMEN: New Portraits celebrated a new format beyond the printed page. The 10-city international tour appeared not in museums or shopping malls but in historically rich “pop-up” sites.

A press conference was held in October 2015 releasing a few never-before-seen photos from the exhibition. The first exhibition was held in London in January 2016 and traveled to each city for 3 weeks at a time throughout the year. Cities included London, Tokyo, San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Frankfurt, Milan, New York and Zurich. The world tour ended in February 2017.

A custom microsite was developed and updated throughout the course of the tour with detailed information and behind-the-scenes footage.

The digital competition titled WOMEN: Heroes was held from April - November 2016.
