Overview

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

Using computer vision and machine learning, Move.ai has built and patented the world’s first algorithm that can perfectly understand the way any human moves from inputting video. It works with an app on any iPhone, new, refurbished or a decade old (collecting dust in drawers) and the data generated can be used to build any content for video games, game engines, VFX, the metaverse and VR/AR/XR experiences.

It will transform the speed and cost efficiencies of traditional animation/motion capture and bring tools, that until recently were only available to AAA/cinematic studios, into the hands of millions of creators.

Background

Traditionally animation and motion capture are both expensive and labour/hardware intensive. They need expert talent, expensive suits, very expensive cameras, and massive studio infrastructure. Animation and motion capture are becoming increasingly important for a global community of businesses and professionals looking to build content for video games, game engines, VFX, the metaverse and VR/AR/XR experiences. All of these market areas are growing exponentially fast and becoming central to the future of humanities experiences.

It was previously impossible for AI to understand and capture exactly how we move. It's a big problem.......everyone moves differently, with a limitless range of motion that defines how we communicate, socialise, experience and feel, offline and online.

We began out of Imperial College London in 2018, with a mission to teach AI to exactly understand human movement from video, creating a game-changing technology. With the help of our client Electronic Arts, in 2021....we finally succeeded.

Describe the idea

We have built world-class generative AI technology that can extract motion from any video, creating high-fidelity animation data that can be used in digital, gaming, game engine or metaverse environments. The software runs on our iOS application that works on every new or refurbished iPhone, down to the model 8.

This dramatically reduces the costs of traditional animation and motion capture whilst also removing the requirement for suits, expensive hardware or dedicated studios. The application is designed to allow any creator, agency, business or brand to access the same kind of AAA animation tools that have previously only been available to leading game studios and cinematic production houses.

The Move.ai app has the potential to transform the way multiple industries, corporations and consumers can create content for game engines, games or the metaverse. Starting with as little as two iPhone devices ($120 refurbished), anyone can animate anything by filming it.

What were the key dates in the development process?

- Move.ai was founded in April 2019 with the core technology reaching MVP stage in September 2019.

- Our patent for a 'Real-time system for generating 4D spatio-temporal model of a real-world environment' was Filed: 19 November 2019.

- The Grant of our Patent GB2589843 happened on 17 May 2022.

- Multiple international patents across North America, Asia, Europe and South America were filed in July 2022 with the majority current in publication.

- Our first engagement and the R&D process, commencing with Electronic Arts, was March 2021.

- We secured a five-year commercial deal with EA in December 2021.

- We began development to build the system for mobiles using iOS in April 2022.

- Our beta for the iOS app launched 1st October 2022 and has had 16,000 sign ups to date, purely from organic non-paid marketing.

- Our app launches on the App Store on 1st March 2023.

Describe the innovation / technology

The Move iOS application works using the camera, networking and connectivity capabilities of iPhone devices. Effectively turning multiple mobiles into a portable and easy-to-deploy motion capture rig. It works with 2-6 mobile devices, where more devices increases both the quality of the motion data and the number of people you can motion capture.

Users simply download the app onto their devices, creating a master control device and active cameras/shooting devices. Set the phones up on tripods or even mounted on any surface and you are ready to shoot. The application functionality instantly syncs (via Bluetooth/Wi-Fi) all of the iPhones into one camera rig, allowing the user to shoot multiple different types of motions and instantly send the footage to our cloud platform, where the video is immediately processed and converted into motion or animation data. The entire process from end to end can take less than ten minutes from set-up to receiving animation data.

The uniqueness of the system is its capacity to be set up rapidly in any location, indoors or outdoors, and its modularity in being able to be used with different numbers of devices and work in any size space.

Describe the expectations / outcome

Since launching the beta in October, we have had over 19,000 sign ups to use the system - including over 700 of the worlds largest VFX studios, brands, agencies and game publishers. These include EA, Ubisoft, Epic, Netflix, Disney, Media-Monks, ILM, HSBC, BAE systems and hundreds more.

The system has been built to scale with every aspect of the technical capability. It can run on any new/old/refurbished iPhone, down to the model 8. Our AWS cloud infrastructure, built with AWS support, provides infinite processing scale.

At a cost of 1 user/seat $365 for 12 months, the app delivers high-quality animation magnitudes cheaper than any other solution. Existing clients believe it has the potential to transform the animation and motion capture industries allowing for the exponential increase in cost efficiency and scale for metaverse/game-engine/game/AR/VR/XR content creation.

Move.ai has received £7m+ investment to date, including our seed round.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

Interoperability: The animation motion data we generate as a file format (fbx) is one of the very few types of data that is already interoperable across games, game engines, metaverses and hardware/software platforms. This baked in interoperability means that what we create can be used in building almost any digital asset/experience or world imaginable.

A BIG problem: Digitising movement has proved to be a very hard problem to solve (e.g the Zuck fake leg saga), and enabling movement to be captured/animated at enormous scale has been impossible or hugely expensive up till now. Yet it remains fundamental to how we experience everything in both physical and digital realities.

Understanding and capturing the nuances of human movement: Everyone moves differently, our movement is influenced by our culture, our geography, our ethnicity, our age, our environment and our psychology. Our system enables the seamless capture of a limitless scale of different movements.
