Background:

Oreocodes is a mobile promotional experience that brings together one of the most iconic duos of all time (Oreos & Milk) in a unique and innovative way. For the very first time, people were able to get discounted Oreos directly from a milk pack, turning every milk in America into an Oreo experience with thousands of offers available for people to order some cookies whenever they reach into their fridge to get a glass of milk.

OREO Cookies have been milk and cookie fans’ top choice for over 110 years, since then, it has made a tremendous effort to become, in the brand's own words, "Milk's Favorite Cookie.

Despite OREO maintaining a 99% brand awareness across the U.S., there are still thousands of American households that purchase milk but don't buy OREOs—yet. We recognized a distinct opportunity to capitalize on an incremental purchase occasion partnering major US Retailers.

Tell the jury about the art direction.

If you look closely, you will see it: barcodes are actually a stack of Oreos. So, we used the shapes, forms and colors similarities to tell the story that whenever there’s milk, there are also Oreos.

With a minimalistic visual approach and using barcodes/stack of Oreos as a start point, we created series of visuals told through a black-and-white execution style. The campaign had a graphic and consistent look and feel and with simple crops, negative spaces, and organic shapes we created a whole new visual language. From merging 3D with graphics to flat illustrations, the black-and-white lines became the core of the visuals always reinforcing the unmissable visual connection between barcodes and Oreos.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

"It's generally agreed upon that Oreos are best when dunked in milk. After all, the slogan is "Milk's favorite cookie." But there's a science behind why they taste better that way, it has to do with the fact that milk contains emulsifiers that affect the way your tongue picks up flavor. Milk, therefore, escalates this process, while also evening out the flavor profile of the cookie, resulting in a more "full-bodied taste."

OREOs also benefit from the methylbutanol being released during the dipping process. Methylbutanol is the flavor compound that cookies develop when baked. When baked goods get wet, this methylbutanol intensifies and is more easily detected not only by the tongue but also by the nose. By dunking OREOs in milk, you're able to maximize the taste of the OREOs."
