Overview

Why is this work relevant for Titanium?

Traffic is a distinctly urban problem, as cities produce 40% of all transportation related carbon emissions. UILA is a revolutionary hybrid between a cargo bike and a small electrical vehicle, created in response to some of the most pressing challenges of our time, like climate change.

UILA is the vehicle concept that comes closest to the ideal carbon footprint- sustainable in its usage, in production, in terms of materials and sustainable in the supply chain. Much of it can be 3D-printed using recycled PET filament. Locally, right there where you want to buy it, reducing emissions to a minimum.

Background

Currently, environmentally conscious users must decide between pragmatic and family friendly cargo bikes or the more comfortable and well-designed e-cars. The task was to develop an overall concept for sustainable personal mobility – an entirely new offering in the vehicles market which is ultimately sustainable and nevertheless highly attractive for the user – from the product idea and development through to the name, the brand and the digital user concept.

Describe the creative idea

UILA is a new vehicle category for personal mobility that aims for the ideal carbon footprint – sustainable in its usage, sustainable in production, sustainable in terms of materials and sustainable in the supply chain. UILA can help to transform personal mobilty to a new sustainable level.

Describe the strategy

By merging the ongoing need for personal mobility with the need for digital and safety comfort into a completely sustainable vehicle category we can make a large impact for sustainable urban mobility. To reach this goal we formed a best-of-breed team. The client is the Berlin Tech StartUp nFrontier. nFrontier works mainly as development and engineering partner for large automotive and transportation companies. The UILA project has been started as a joint-venture between with nFrontier as product developer, Stratasys 3D Printing systems as manufacturer and the agency – in charge of brand, customer journey and UX/UI.

Describe the execution

UILA is produced in large parts in 3D printing from recycled filament, locally – in the place where it is bought. This way the emissions are reduced to a minimum and the supply chain is shorter and more effective.

UILA is powered by two-wheel hub motors that draw their energy from a battery with a capacity of 1200 Wh. Operation by a pedal-operated actuator with a chainless electrical drive train.

UILA can travel around carbon-neutrally. You can drive it wherever a bike is permitted to go – without the need for a driving licence, at 25 km/h and with a range of 70 km. Even so, UILA will protect you like a car. It has two doors, two seats and even a boot. And using your smartphone, you can turn it into a digital device on wheels.

List the results

The new integrated identity and design concept helped the Berlin Startup in the process of VC gathering and PR. UILA debuted as functional prototype on the FormNext Show in November 2022. Today it is bound for pre-production, The first 1,000 UILAs are set to hit our roads and bike paths by the end of 2024.
