Description

The concluding event for the first phase of the bioethik campain of Aktion Mensch was to be performed in Berlin. For one week, public activities transformed the capital into “Die Stadt der 1000 Fragen”. Supported by a massive billboard campaign, major architectural structures of Berlin–among others the Brandenburg Gate–were used as backdrop for large area projection screens showing the central statements of the bioethics discussion. A broadly structured program of events including theatre productions, discussion forums, public readings and cinema films gave everybody many chances to discuss the theme of bioethics. Highlight of these events was the “Nacht der 1000 Fragen”, an especially composed theater production in 13 scenic acts involving many prominent actors and each of the acts presenting a selected aspect of the bioethics discussion.

Outcome

Over the period of the event lasting from September 18 though 24, 2003, the presence of “The 1000 Questions” project in Berlin could not be overlooked. The individual facets of bioethics were illuminated in more than 40 individual events. Highlights certainly include the “Café of the Last Questions” at the Sophien-Cemetry, the women summit on the theme of “Stem Cells, Sons and Heirs, Common Stocks” (in German a play on words), the reading to children on the theme of Creation, a radio play production and, of course the “Nacht der 1000 Fragen” which was attended by more than a thousand guests from all facets of culture and politics including, among others the President of the Bundestag.
