Overview

Background

Situation: There are many different science and health-related projects happening within Google Research & Machine Intelligence.

Brief: How is artificial intelligence accelerating these projects, and what do they have in common with each other? What is the overarching narrative?

Objectives: Show the potential impact of AI on patients, doctors, researchers, scientists, and others. Make the technical and specialized worlds of science and medicine more understandable and relatable to the everyday person, while still maintaining professional credibility.

Idea

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already a part of our everyday lives – from search, to translate, to finding all the dog photos we’ve ever taken. Soon, it will also have a major impact on our health and wellbeing. For the past few years, Google researchers have been exploring ways these same technologies could help advance the fields of medicine and science, working with scientists, doctors, and others in the field. In this video, we share a few early research projects that have big potential.

Strategy

Artificial intelligence is an often repeated term, but it’s meaning is vague for most people. When applied to medicine and science, it can sound even more confounding. Through a short documentary, we wanted to explain the potential of AI, make current research in science and medicine more relatable, and maintain professional credibility.

Execution

We did planning, internal research, pre-interviews, location scouting, final interviews, edit, infographics, titles, motion design, color correction, and conform between March 14 and August 27, 2018. The final film was launched on YouTube to an international audience.

Outcome

The video was viewed +187k times on YouTube, localized in 16 languages, and lives as an asset for press, conferences, recruiting, and helping the everyday user understand why Google is pursuing this work.
