Description

The kids fighting cancer at St. Jude can’t travel the world, so we brought the world to them. Expedia’s “Dream Adventures” virtually transported four brave patients from the Memphis hospital to trips of their dreams thousands of miles away.

Execution

While VR headsets may seem like the most practical approach, doctors told us that its reputation for motion-sickness made headsets out-of-the-question for these patients. Instead, we constructed a 4-walled travel portal, and used 360° filming, projection mapping and live streaming technology together in this way that’s never been done before.

Expedia employees armed with 360° cameras set out on adventures around the globe, and streamed their travel experiences back in real-time onto the walls using projection mapping. Through this innovation, Expedia delivered truly immersive travel experiences to each patient, enabling them to explore freely, interact with their Expedia guide in real-time, and lose themselves in the healing power of travel.

Outcome

Expedia’s “Dream Adventures” gave kids who need it most the chance to forget about their cancer treatments for the day and experience the healing power of travel. In June 2016, the 360-degree installation will become a permanent part of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, so more kids can get out and see the world.
