Description

Our creative idea was to help fans feel what it would be like to be a wizard through the use of Google products and services.

As part of the campaign, fans could:

• Cast spells from the film using an Android device

• Visit Newt’s shed in the wizarding world through an immersive Daydream View VR experience

• Navigate to magical locations in Google Maps

• Explore scenes from the film through bespoke 360° Street View panoramas

• Send well-wishes to muggle friends and family with a whimsical Allo sticker pack

• Watch their favourite YouTube Creators make their own magic with sets and props from the film

• Delve deeper into the world through an Enhanced Google Search Knowledge Panel featuring exclusive rich content

Execution

Spells were first proposed and devised by the Google creative team in London. The team developed an initial prototype for review by Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling in the spring of 2016.

Once approved, the core development work was then undertaken and overseen by the Google Engineering team in London, working closely across multiple global products including Google Search, Google Assistant and Google Home.

After six weeks of development, the functionality was throughly tested by Google’s internal QA teams around the world. It was rolled out to coincide with the campaign launch in October 2016.

Spells are available globally to all Android devices and will remain part of the product in perpetuity.

Developed first for English, Spells are now available to billions of users in: English, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Korean languages.

Outcome

• 1 million+ spells cast DAILY around the world, available in: English, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Korean languages

• All generating an estimated earned media value of $50m through global PR & press coverage

• And helping the film conjure more than $800+ million in worldwide box office
