Description

Less than 1% of girls express interest in majoring in Computer Science. Yet tech is growing faster than any other industry. So Google created Made with Code — an initiative to inspire girls to try coding and see it as a means to pursue their dreams.

For the holidays, we partnered with the National Park Foundation and National Park Service to let girls bring the National Tree Lighting ceremony to life through code. On the Made with Code site, girls could use an introductory coding experience to design the colors, patterns, and animation of the lights on 56 state and territory trees outside of the White House. Once a girl completed her project, her design was sent to Washington D.C. to light up her selected state’s tree. Each of the 56 trees carried 900 interactive LED lights which shined through December with designs coded by girls across the country.

The project introduced millions of girls to code on a national stage. Even President Obama acknowledged and thanked girls in his remarks for their contribution to this historic event. The project received unanimous praise from mainstream press, such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Seventeen, and Mashable, as well as numerous mentions on social media.

Execution

Outcome

Our :60 launch film generated 8.9MM views without any paid media. Hundreds of publications from 16 countries reported on the project. Engagement with Street View skyrocketed. On Painted Streets’ first day, the number of unique users on Street View grew by 70% -- the highest in the product’s history. And the campaign generated over 5K social mentions and 42MM social impressions.
