Overview

Background

In Indonesia, the gender gap is one of the largest in the world. Being surrounded by negative voices affects a female’s self-esteem and Google in its effort wants women and girls to know they have a place to raise their voices louder than the biases and get unbiased, empowering information.

Idea

On International Women’s Day, Google partnered with Voice of Baceprot. The first-ever hijab-wearing, female rock-metal-trio. Their voices and lyrics were taking on societal biases, changing perceptions of women’s role in society.

The campaign, #YukBukaSuara (Voice It Out) leveraged the power of music to influence culture and empower women in Indonesia - a clarion call to girls and women to take the Google Voice Search mic and add their powerful voice to the world, despite biased societal voices.

Timed with their new single, Google and Voice of Baceprot told an evocative story of how one voice inspires others to find theirs using music’s ability to transcend boundaries, bring people together and make a social change.

Strategy

For women and girls in Indonesia, internalized societal voices of systemic discrimination exist from birth. Biases such as "a woman's place is at home", "hijabi women should be soft-spoken", and "rock music is not suitable for good girls."

As a brand, Google wanted women and girls to know they have a place to raise their voices louder than the biases and get unbiased, empowering information.

That’s why we used the power of music to create a ripple effect in relaying the brand’s message while partnering with revolutionary, barrier-breaking role models.

To show young women that every single Google query voiced by her in her daily search for self-growth at work, school, or in life brings Indonesia one step closer to closing the gap.

Execution

On International Women’s Day, Google partnered with Voice of Baceprot. Together, we launched #YukBukaSuara (Voice It Out) - a clarion call to girls and women to take the Google Voice Search mic and add their powerful voice to the world. Timed with their new single, Google and Voice of Baceprot told an evocative story of how one voice inspires others to find theirs.

The band’s music gave a voice to women who had previously felt silenced by societal biases and helped to break down stereotypes and discrimination.

Women, girls, and allies from every age and gender joined into #YukBukaSuara, online, with live streams on topics nobody was talking about. And offline, as human billboards by women took over male-coded places in Indonesia.

Outcome

The campaign was seen by millions and received widespread coverage on popular youth social channels across Facebook, instagram and Twitter like, Antaranews, Popbela, Detikinet, Lawjusticeinvestigasi, Millennials of Indonesia, FIMELAdotcom, VemaleDotcom, dianrestoe and many many more.

Sparking conversations about the importance of gender equality.

The use of music in the campaign also helped to engage a younger generation, who were more likely to connect with the message of the campaign through music. This helped to reach a wider audience and amplify the message of the campaign.

Google saw an increase in Search trends related to women's empowerment, education and career opportunities, bringing Indonesia closer to lessening the gender gap.
