Description

Being arguably the most famous recording studio in the world, around 400,000 people from around the world visit Abbey Road Studios every year. But they can’t get beyond the gates - it just isn’t feasible for Abbey Road to let them in.

Through Google Cardboard, as well as Google Maps, YouTube and Google Play, Google was uniquely positioned to provide people across the globe unparalleled access to this icon - to its studios, its history, its music, its innovations, and its process.

Inside Abbey Road VR opened the doors of Abbey Road to everyone around the world, enabling them to feel what it’s like to step inside the studios, and to understand their 80 year old story.

Execution

The Inside Abbey Road app immerses fans using Google Cardboard virtual reality and surround sound.

To create it, the studios were 3D scanned picking out 3 million data points that shows intricate detail of the space. This gives users the experience of incredible depth, and an even more realistic feeling of being in the iconic studios.

Once you’ve loaded the app, the journey starts with a nine-part guided tour narrated by Giles Martin.

After the tour, you’re free to roam at your own leisure. In Studio Two, look up and discover hidden content hotspots and watch the London Symphony Orchestra setting up for a rehearsal. Turn to your right in Studio 3, that’s where famously Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett recorded. Or walk into the middle of Studio One and immerse yourself in a London Symphony Orchestra recording with surround sound.
