Description
Unlike in most other developed countries, Internet campaigning during a 12 day period before the election is banned in Japan.
December 2012, the national election was held.
Without the help of the internet, people weren't able to reach out for information they needed.
Google is taking on these rules on behalf of the citizens.
Japan’s politicians may be banned from internet campaigning, but the voters are not. So we made them ask the politicians.
Idea was an online meeting where 10 participants, selected from the general public and 8 party leaders including the Prime Minister talking face to face via Google+ Hangout.
This successfully conveyed politician’s thoughts and characteristics to the citizens.
Google portrayed the real need of internet campaigning.
Not only receiving a big attention, this created a greater momentum towards freeing internet campaigning.
In 2013, Internet campaigning was finally legalized.
Execution
28th November, the teaser movie was released on YouTube, creating a big fuss.
14th December, the event was held on time. Google+ Hangout connected 10 participants, selected from the general public, and 8 party leaders including the former and present prime ministers.
8 Hangout events were held in a day. One each for each party leader.
5 questions were made, all selected from the gathered questions from the public.
To make the conditions equal, all the questions were the same for each party leader.
The time to answer those questions were also strictly measured.
The Q&A and the movie were archived in the site, so that people could check afterwards.
Outcome
The web page netted over 10m page views. Since the product is the Hangout and YouTube, gathering attention is of course the primary goal.
This successfully conveyed politicians thoughts and characteristics. With this information, people were able to vote with more confidence.
Furthermore this created greater momentum for the drive to free up internet campaigning in Japan.
After the election, the Japanese government finally declared its intent to legalize internet campaigning. The internet campaigning is finally legalized.
What kind of an outcome could exceed this result for a company who tries to organize every kind of information on the planet?
