Execution

We mixed water projection technique, live-action performance and high-end CG sequences to bring a unique, larger-than-life sensory experience to life. The narrative was a romantic hyperreal journey through New York City, complementing the downtown sensibility that inspires the new brand, and culminating in a behind-the-scenes showdown with Ralph Lauren himself.

Hundreds of spectators witnessed five-story tall models walk across water revealing the latest Spring 2015 collection. Merging natural elements with technology, the 2K resolution images were projected from the side of Central Park’s largest lake onto the water spray, measuring 60 feet tall and 150 feet wide. The sequence is a mix of live-action footage of runway models and practical set elements composited with 3D and 2D animation. The set design was a collaboration between the art department CG artists, which resulted in the analogous mix of practical set design and CG extension. Using computer-controlled camera rigs and previz, artists carefully planned and executed each shot's elements simultaneously, from the live-action performance and props to the CG environments and visual effects. Multiple elements of each shot were captured simultaneously to generate the incredible 4D effects.

Outcome

A first-of-its-kind 4D fashion show was created for New York Fashion Week — staged live at The Lake at Central Park — to push the brand to the forefront of innovative fashion and technology. The project blends creative technology, artistic talent and advances in the way imagery can be displayed that could forever change the landscape for a fashion show. Social impressions reached 90 million within 24 hours of launch - a record high for the brand - and the :30 video has garnered over 1.3 million YouTube views.
