Execution

The platform is a completely new innovation combining browser technology, capitalising on existing user behaviour multi-screen usage and mobile gaming. It seeks to capture the imagination and delight players in a way they’ve never seen before.

Technology we used”

- WebSockets - syncing devices and allowing real-time gameplay

- WebAudio - high quality, responsive sound

- CSS3 and Canvas - rich, immersive visuals

- Using swipe / gestural features on a mobile website is a function most believe only possible on native apps

Specifically, for Chrome Super Sync Sports, WebSockets are specifically used to establish the communication between the a mobile that acted as a controller to the desktop. Each user that ‘synced’ their phones to the desktop represented a new socket session between the mobile and desktop. During the the race the mobile instance updated the desktop interface with the global speed factor of the player’s character based on the accuracy of the touch gestures on the user on the mobile.

Importantly, we created a world that was quirky and playful to make a complex piece of technology, feel inviting and warm - our 50 characters included a yacht-owning pheasant, a sporty watermelon, and the universe!

To reinforce the quirkiness of the gameplay and to create a sense of urgency when racing, the soundtrack is composed solely of sounds made by the mouth and inspired by 8-bit classics.

Outcome

In the next stage of development, we hope will be to expand the sports modes beyond running, cycling and swimming, and introduce levels of difficulty to extend competition and repeat playability.

We continue to use Super Sync Sports as a key way to demonstrate to the developer community what is possible through the Chrome browser. We do this by participating in developer conferences, hosting developer G+ Hangouts, and being active in the developer community through HMTL5 articles and our developer relations team daily outreach with the developer community. We hope that all this will expand the minds of developers worldwide, and help to enhance what is possible on the web. As a whole, this is the objective of Chrome Experiments and we want to see many other developers developing solutions which sync phones to desktop, whether they are games or even utiliities.

6 weeks from launch, +1million visitors to the site, an average duration time of 7mins, over 50% of visitors synced their devices to play, and +1.7m video views of our promotional online video.
