Idea
Samsung was ready to roll out their new Galaxy S22 Ultra phone and our brief was to find a consumer friendly way to demonstrate Nightography, its new camera feature especially designed for night photography.
Since consumers rarely understand camera specs, we decided to showcase its performance by giving it the ultimate test: a night dive in the ocean.
We worked together with one of Vietnam’s most famous young ocean explorers, Zen Le and a team of experienced underwater cinematographers to film her and her team as they were exploring Vietnam's depths after dark capturing amazing, colorful details of its oceanic night life with the phone’s camera.
The result is an impressive, extreme product demonstration. The phone’s camera really exceeded our expectations, capturing bright colors in mind blowing detail even in the ocean’s pitch dark environment.
Execution
Shooting an underwater film at night was a massive challenge, especially in Covid times and in a country with very strict border restrictions in place at the time of the shoot.
In order to deliver to the audience the full experience of a night dive, we had to use different filming techniques.
We used a professional underwater camera to film all the wide shots of the team diving and exploring the night ocean.
While for the close up shots we relied entirely on Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Nightography camera feature, to help us capture the amazing details and colors of Vietnam’s oceanic night life. A massive challenge by itself, since underwater night scenes have never been filmed before with a phone camera.
The extreme low light conditions gave us a unique opportunity to showcase Galaxy S22 Ultra’s new camera AI and its new pixel censor’s impressive performance. Turning our extreme product demonstration to a great product launching success.
